The Mitsubishi A6M Zero, commonly known simply as the Zero, was the Imperial Japanese Navy’s most famous fighter aircraft of World War II. Advanced aluminum alloys were used throughout the airframe, while armor protection and self-sealing fuel tanks were largely omitted to keep the aircraft as light as possible.

Service History

The Zero first saw combat during the Second Sino-Japanese War and quickly established a reputation as a highly effective fighter. Its long range allowed Japanese forces to escort bombers farther than most contemporary fighters could manage, providing a significant strategic advantage.
The aircraft became famous during the opening stages of the Pacific War. During the attacks on Southeast Asia, the Philippines, and the Dutch East Indies, Zero pilots achieved numerous victories against Allied aircraft. The fighter’s ability to out-turn nearly every opponent it encountered made it particularly dangerous in dogfights.
The Zero also played a central role during the Attack on Pearl Harbor, where carrier-based fighters escorted Japanese strike aircraft and defended the attacking force. Throughout 1941 and 1942, the aircraft became a symbol of Japanese air power.
However, as the war progressed, the Zero’s weaknesses became increasingly apparent. The lightweight design that provided exceptional maneuverability also left the aircraft vulnerable to enemy fire. New Allied fighters such as the Grumman F6F Hellcat and Vought F4U Corsair possessed greater speed, better protection, and more powerful engines.
American pilots developed tactics specifically designed to counter the Zero’s strengths. Rather than engaging in turning battles, they relied on high-speed attacks and superior firepower. As Japan lost experienced pilots and struggled to replace them, the Zero gradually lost its dominance.
